Crash in finale ruins BORA - hansgrohe's chances on first stage of Tour Down Under

The first road stage of the Tour Down Under offered the fast men a chance to take a win, with BORA - hansgrohe backing Jordi Meeus in the expected bunch sprint. Unfortunately, the Belgian went down in the first half of the race, but was able to rejoin the peloton after a wheel change. In the decisive phase, the team from Raubling moved to the front to position Jordi for the sprint finale. But after he was involved in another crash in the final kilometre, he wasn't able to mix things up in the end, and the day's victory went to P. Bauhaus.

01 P. Bauhaus                3:37:35
02 C. Ewan                           +0:00
03 M. Matthews                   +0:00
61 G. Aleotti                         +0:00

From the finish line
"After the strong performance by Jordi in the criterium, where he was very convincing with a second place, we wanted to support him 100 per cent today. I must say that went very, very well throughout the day. Unfortunately, he went down in the middle of the race and had to fight his way back after a wheel change. He managed that quite well. Unfortunately, he then crashed again quite heavily in the finale, and we hope that despite his injuries, he will be able to stay in the race. But the doctor will have the last word on this. Tomorrow is another sprint stage, but we'll just have to see what the medical diagnoses look like and then will accordingly make our plans." - Christian Pömer, Sports Director
