Sibiu Cycling Tour: Giovanni Aleotti wins the Bâlea Lac mountain finish and takes over the GC lead

Stage two, the queen stage of the Sibiu Cycling Tour, took the peloton from Sibiu to Bâlea Lac and covered a distance of 179.4km. The main obstacle of the day was a 23km climb to the mountain finish at Bâlea Lac. An early breakaway went clear on the first and mostly flat part of the stage and was brought back right at the bottom of the final climb. BORA - hansgrohe controlled the race on the last ascent and launched the decisive attack three kilometres from the finish with Cian Uijtdebroeks and Giovanni Aleotti. After a perfect lead-out by Uijtdebroeks, it was Aleotti who outsprinted H. Vanhoucke to take the stage win as well as the GC lead. Cian Uijtedebroeks now sits in 3rd place overall and leads the young rider classification.

From the Finish Line

“After last year, it feels good to be in the leader’s jersey again here at the Sibiu Tour. Today worked out absolutely perfectly. I already knew the climb and together with Cian we were able to make a move at the right time. I’m really happy with this stage win and want to thank my teammates for their amazing work today. A special shoutout to Cesare Benedetti, it was his effort to bring back the breakaway. We’ve got an uphill TT tomorrow morning and a short stage in the evening, I’ll give my best to defend the jersey.“  Giovanni Aleotti

“A pretty good day for us here in Romania! Giovanni knew the last climb very well and played this perfectly to his advantage. I’m also happy for Cian, who's riding a strong race here. Even though he still has to learn some things on the tactical side, which is normal for a young rider, his physical performance is impressive. Today the whole team did a really good job, and Cesare Benedetti even pulled 130km on the flat. That’s what I call teamwork. We have some riders here who did the Giro and I think we were able to bring some Giro spirit to this race as well.“ Enrico Gasparotto, Sports Director
