Speedy start to Tour of Slovakia prologue see Maciej Bodnar and Peter Sagan reach breakneck speeds to fly into the top ten

The opener for the 2021 Tour of Slovakia was all about speed. The 1.6km individual time trial prologue was short, and would give the riders an opportunity to put the power down from the moment the timer started on this race against the clock. A completely flat out and back route would make for some high speeds, with only a u-turn at the halfway point to slow things down, and while the course was otherwise free from obstacles, this turn featured cobblestones and tramlines ready to catch a wheel. When the dust settled on the fast and full-on course, there would be an answer to the question of who would wear the coveted yellow jersey of race leader going into the first road stage tomorrow. The fastest riders were coming home in less than two minutes, with tenths of a second separating the top-placed riders, and BORA-hansgrohe were posting strong times from the start, Daniel Oss and Juraj Sagan making fast finishes and Eric Baška impressing with a time that landed him in twentieth. The team’s time trial specialist, Maciej Bodnar, took the provisional top spot, closing the day in seventh overall, just 1.68 seconds off first place. Peter Sagan made his way down the starting ramp to huge cheers from the crowds in Kosice, the Slovak national champion making his first appearance at his home race. Sprinting for the final 300m, Peter crossed the line to take tenth position, putting two BORA-hansgrohe riders in the stage’s top ten and gaining Peter the jersey of the best-placed Slovak rider for stage 1 tomorrow.

From the Finish Line

"As expected, we started with a very fast prologue. This type of very short time-trial doesn't really suit me, I prefer much longer ones. Races courses like the one today are for very fast and explosive riders. However, I managed to be in the top 10, I wasn't expecting to be so close to the top and this means that I had good legs today. Starting tomorrow, we will all work for Peter in order to get the best result possible." – Maciej Bodnar

"It was a very special day for me, my first ever participation in my home race, the Tour of Slovakia. It was truly spectacular to see those huge crowds on the road, especially so many children. I can't hide I felt some pressure and I gave everything I had. With the race course being so short, the time gaps were very small and just one second could make a difference. I look forward to tomorrow's first road stage." – Peter Sagan

"The Tour of Slovakia got off to a speedy start because of the very short prologue, just over 1.5km. In such a short course you had to go at 100% from start to finish and give your absolute best. I think we raced well, Maciej Bodnar was 7th, just 2 seconds from the top, Peter Sagan was close behind him as was Erik Baška. We didn't lose much time and from tomorrow we hit the road stages." – Jan Valach, Sports Director
