Aleksandr Vlasov fifth at Coppa Sabatini after strong and offensive ride

As one of the “pre mondiali” the Coppa Sabatini is also one of the quite selective semi-classic spring races. On different laps a couple of climbs split the bunch in the second part of the race and with 40 kilometers remaining a strong 12-men break was established. For BORA – hansgrohe Aleksandre Vlasov was part of this decisive move and showed impressive shape in his first race after the Tour de France. Aleks attacked on the second last lap to establish a 30” lead and was finally caught from a 4-men chasing group with just six kilometers remaining. In the end he crossed the line in fifth place when F. Martinez took the win.

From the finish line

“I am happy with my performance today. The boys did a great job to bring me into the final and I was in front when the decisive break went away. When I attacked I thought one or two guys would come with me, but unfortunately this was not the chase. I knew it would be difficult in the sprint as this was my first race for 7 weeks and of course I miss some peak power as a result. So I went all in with my attack. It looked promising at some point, but the group behind had the advantage in numbers and caught me with six kilometers to go. In the end I finished 5th which is ok. But in general, I am very satisfied with my shape today.” – Aleksandr Vlasov

“We knew it will be difficult for Aleks in a possible sprint from a group and therefore we decided to make the race hard with our different options we had in the race today. Lenni controlled the race in the pre-final and Toni, Felix, Cian and Emu did a good job before the group with Aleks went away. Our plan was then to attack and avoid a sprint and Aleks showed his class on the last two laps. It wasn’t enough in the end, but we can be really happy with the day and especially the shape Aleks showed at his first race after the Tour.” – Christian Pömer, Sports Director
