BORA - ARGON 18 climbs with the best.

Patrick Konrad sprints to a 2nd place in the queen stage of the Giro del Trentino.

Today’s queen stage of the Giro del Trentino was as hard as expected. An early breakaway of 10 riders including Cesare Benedetti, managed to stay in front until the last climb of the day. As yesterday José Mendes, today “CeCe” was the strongest rider of the leading group, and was the last one caught from the favourites. Until the last climb the breakaway did work together well, then Benedetti could go clear from the rest and took on a solo fight against the peloton.

Sky, with race leader Mikel Landa, controlled the race the whole day. But on the last climb Astana tried to isolate the Sky leader and set a very hard pace on the front of the peloton. The group was already small, when Cesare Benedetti was overtaken from the Astana train. Within this small group of favourites, like yesterday, Patrick Konrad and Emanuel Buchmann were the two BORA – ARGON 18 riders who could follow the best climbers. After the climb, also Ag2R and Astana had two riders in the 10 men leading group, which meant a hard fight on the last 10 flat kilometres with several attacks, also from Buchmann.

At the end it was Tanel Kangert from Astana who could take advantage of the situation and took a solo victory in this 3rd stage of the Giro del Trentino. Patrick Konrad won the sprint of the chasing group and finished in superb 2nd place. With also Emanuel Buchmann in 7th place, the team showed again a really strong performance. In the GC Konrad moved up to 6th place, while Buchmann remains 8th overall.

“On the last climb I really was on the limit, but I guess everyone was. It was changing between and attacks and watch each other all the time, really brutal. As Emu (Buchmann) and myself then have been in the 10 men leading group, we decided that he tries to attack and I try to concentrate on the sprint. It was a pity that Kangert could go clear, but I also think the second place is a really strong result for us. The whole team really did a great job yet again. We will see what tomorrow will happen, last year a group stayed in front. I am sure there are a lot guys who will try do something tomorrow.” – Patrick Konrad

“The team did an excellent job today. CeCe (Benedetti) was the strongest in the breakaway group and he showed our colours well on the front of the race. In the peloton Patrick (Konrad) and Emu (Buchmann) again have been well protected from the rest of the team. Therefore, both could save energy for the last climb. Then it was a kind of elimination race on this last climb, Patrick and Emu showed today that they belong to the best climbers here. The second place from Patrick is a great reward for a really strong team performance.” – Enrico Poitschke, sports director
